Are Plate Carrier Vests Effective at Mitigating Impact Injuries?

The force of a ballistic projectile upon impact with an object or surface causes blunt impact injuries. Occasionally, many plate carrier-based ballistic vests include a trauma plate or ballistic plate for additional protection. This bulletproof vest is designed to be worn independently. The plate bearers are equipped with gears that reduce blunt impact and other ballistic risks.

Plate carrier vests are a sort of appliqué armor capable of repelling greater attackers. Typically, a frontal and a backal will be utilized, with the option of side inserts. Several other locations, including the shoulders, lap, and overall torso, are also covered by plates.

Based on the materials used in their construction and their resistance to trauma impact, plate carrier vests can be roughly categorized as follows:

  • Nanomaterials

In terms of strength-to-weight ratios, carbon nanotubes and nanocomposite materials are superior to other materials when utilized for trauma plates and anti-ballistic textiles.

  • Polymer

Due to the high level of energy or force absorption provided by polymer compounds, polymer-made plates can withstand shock and vibration. Due to the viscoelastic compound’s physical features, this material has a greater capacity for energy absorption. Viscous, elastic polymer fluids with high molecular weights are blended in this mixture.

  • Metal

There are various varieties of metal trauma plate carrier vest, including those made of steel, titanium, aluminum, and other alloys. Although steel plates undergo less deformation upon an impact, they are also vulnerable to higher impulses because they bend very little and hence have little energy. As a result of a shattered steel plate, a projectile is launched across the aircraft, potentially hurting others.

  • Ceramic

Boron carbide, silicon carbide, and other materials can be used to create ceramic plates. In addition to being more durable and lighter than metal armor, ceramic armor also functions as a bulletproof vest against high-velocity projectiles. Additionally, it can be utilized to distort tungsten core penetrators. Ceramic fragmentation lowers the penetrating power of projectiles and bullets, rendering them ineffective.
